About the lecture
The search for exoplanets, planets outside our solar system, has revolutionised our understanding of the universe and of our place in it. Since the discovery of the first exoplanet orbiting a Sun-like star in 1995, astronomy has undergone a technological and theoretical renaissance that has identified thousands of these alien worlds.
In this talk we will explore the fascinating field of detecting and studying exoplanets, covering the techniques used, the diversity of planets discovered and the key projects that have driven, and continue to drive, this scientific revolution.
We will also review some of the most astonishing recent discoveries, such as the planet WASP-193b, a planet as light as candyfloss that challenges our knowledge of how planetary systems form, or SPECULOOS-3b, an Earth-like planet that will allow us, for the first time, to explore the surface composition of these distant worlds.
